The ‘West Region’ is coming to BBC One, the BBC has confirmed
A new West region news channel is being launched this summer with the BBC Two flagship.
The West region, which will be shown on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer, will be the UK’s largest independent news and information service with more than 40 million subscribers.
News and information from the region will be featured in the BBC’s international and national programmes.
News editor Chris Mitchell said the BBC was looking forward to the arrival of the new news channel.
“The West region is the BBC Wales and the West region News is one of the most successful news outlets in Wales and we are thrilled that we are going to be working with the Welsh Government and the Welsh people to bring these two amazing platforms together in one,” he said.
News regional script BBC Two Wales will feature a West region edition of the BBC News website, with a news and entertainment section that is set to debut on July 31.
The news section will be based around local news from the West and will be able to feature news from across Wales.
The programme will feature new local stories, current events, events from around the country and features interviews from BBC Wales’ staff, local experts and current affairs personalities.
News program will be broadcast across BBC Wales, the Wales Governance website and on the BBC Radio Wales app.
The program will also be available on BBC iplayer.
BBC Wales Wales Executive Director David James said the West Region News initiative was part of a wider programme to improve the Welsh news and journalism environment.
“BBC Wales is committed to producing and delivering high-quality news and content across the BBC and we’re delighted that the West Regions News will be part of this initiative,” he added.
“We’re excited about working with BBC Wales to ensure we deliver a quality news service for Welsh people, in the West, for the West.”
BBC Wales said it was committed to delivering high quality news and coverage for Welsh communities and the wider Welsh community.
“Our news coverage will be relevant and relevant to all parts of the country, as well as to Wales,” said BBC Wales Executive Producer, Phil Edwards.
The announcement comes just weeks after the BBC announced plans to change the name of its international news channel from BBC World to BBC Wales.
It also follows a decision by the broadcaster to change its news format to be more news-focused and include more local news stories.
