Jun 29, 2018-The special investigation team formed by the Home Ministry to probe the 33-kg gold smuggling case and the subsequent murder of Sanam Shakya, an alleged gold carrier, has arrested Birgunj-based businessman Raju Daruka from Hotel Annapurna in Kathmandu on Friday.
The team arrested Daruka after another businessman arrested in connection to the case gave up the former’s name during the investigation.
“We have detained Daruka after knowing about his involvement in the smuggling case,” said a member of the investigating committee.
The Birgunj-based businessman was currently running business in the Capital for some time now.
Daruka’s family members have been involved in the illegal trade of gold in the past. His eldest son Amit Daruka was arrested while smuggling the precious yellow metal from India by a team of Armed Police Force from Birgunj customs around eight years ago.
